Losing control: Talk of metabolism yields plenty of misinformation

How many times when the topic of weight loss comes up that the word "metabolism" soon follows?
Seems as though every time you want to talk about what to eat, when to eat, how to eat or anything else associated with diet, someone drops the "M" word and then the discussion begins on exactly how to help speed up your metabolism, which in turn leads to weight loss.
Weight loss and metabolism are truly connected, and that debate isn't to be questioned. Rather, when you hear the general public or even someone of a professional ilk like a personal trainer talk about metabolism, do you often wonder if they really know about it or if it is like anything else: they go by what they hear.
Is metabolism and breakfast really linked together? Does metabolism that is slow make it impossible to lose weigh or is a speedy metabolism overrated?
All of these question beg answer, but what you need to know more than anything is what metabolism truly is a measure of: turning what you eat into energy and how efficiently you can burn off calories and not store fat.

Probably the biggest misnomer about metabolism is the idea that you can't skip breakfast, when studies have shown that the "most important meal of the day" doesn't lead to any more weight loss whether you eat it or not.
The trick to any meal is to limit the amount of starches you intake and if you need those carbohydrates to eat them before or right after an exercise program; they'll tend to turn quicker that way.
In addition to breakfast and that myth being debunked, you also can't put a lot of stock into the eating small meals per day is going to boost that same metabolism. While the conventional thinking is less is better and frequency is king, you can still eat three meals per day and lose weight and not fret if breakfast, lunch and dinner don't turn into breakfast number 1 and 2, lunch 1 and 2 and so on and so forth.
At the end of the day, the tried and true eating method always works the best. High protein, low fat and moderate amounts of carbohydrates mixed with an exercise program that is regular and plenty of time to rest and adequately sleep is the combination that allows you to win versus the weight loss game, rather than become flustered with so few real truths about dropping pounds.
