War machine: Why holiday toy shopping spree is starting early

As Fall approaches and in store displays transform from barbecue grills and above ground swimming pools and rafts to Halloween decorations and Christmas trees, holiday shopping isn't far behind.
If it hasn't started already.
Some prudent shoppers have begun buying even before summer hit, and those tend to express their satisfaction above being "done" with all their buying even before one leaf hits the ground. To those shoppers, kudos to you for being on the ball, but when it comes toys and games for kids, you can't shop for what isn't yet available.
Toys tend to be the one item that moms and dads can't scoop up in July, mostly because the "hot" toys of the season don't arrive until closer to the holidays, and this year is going to be just as rampant given what is on the horizon from a feature film standpoint.
Yes, the great equalizer for holiday toy buying is the imminent release of the newest "Star Wars" movie, which hits theaters in December of this year. The toys already have created quite the stir for the holidays as kids are clamoring for the new figures that run parallel with characters from this latest installment, "Episode 7," which takes place after the original "Return of the Jedi" from 1983.
Can "Star Wars" use the power of the "the force" to lift holiday spending to the point that economists can predict a successful season of spending? Well, "Star Wars" is the one brand that is the great equalizer when you talk specifically about spending as it relates to toys and how the holidays will pan out for retailers.

"Star Wars," the toys specifically, are projected to do monstrous numbers and retailers are licking their chops for that push toward the December 18 release of "The Force Awakens," the title of the latest movie.
Ironically, the "awakening" part is exactly what is going to happen to the holiday season in terms of toy buying thanks to the return of the "Star Wars" brand. But the likes of Luke Skywalker and company won't be the only revived name to help the toy market, which undoubtedly is going to surge thanks to not only "Star Wars" but the return of "Jurassic Park" and the "Batman vs. Superman" movie that is due out next summer. Rumor has it those toys are going to be hitting shelves just in time for the holiday season.
All of it cumulatively is going to translate into a buying season of epic proportions and one that retailers and the general public aren't going to forget any time soon.
