Take a long listen to Blue Man Group or partake in one of their enigmatic stage shows and it’s hard to leave the arena or theater without being astonished by their innovation. This talented trio of blue-faced performers took the world by storm in the late 1990s and left comparable performers green with envy. A big part of the appeal of Blue Man Group is that they can’t be pigeon-holed into one specific musical genre, nor can they be lumped in as traditional theater folk. Blue Man Group is an experimental musical act that dabbles in everything from comedy to theater. They’ve released several acclaimed CDs and talk of a movie has sporadically surfaced since they began this endeavor nearly 30 years ago. When Blue Man Group isn’t touring the world or releasing its own music, they’re writing and composing soundtracks and scores for movies and television shows. Blue Man Group is mostly known for albums that boast instrumental music, with no vocals. The group went away from that as the year 2000 rolled around and began welcoming in guest vocalists and implementing more of a rock-oriented repertoire. They’re also known for producing sound from non-traditional instruments such as a piece of PVC pipe. Just when you think you have Blue Man Group figured out, they evolve. Even though fans only see three men painted in blue, the Blue Man Group is constantly seeking out competent performs to join the revolution. Realistically, three men can’t tour around the world; they’re always looking for a few blue men. When the founders of Blue Man Group aren’t developing a new direction or strategy for their wildly popular and successful brand, they’re devoting time and energy to its aptly titled Blue School. This isn’t a traditional learning facility but rather incorporates a curriculum that is inquiry-based and encourages creativity, artistic prowess and innovative thinking – the same attributes that mirror the Blue Man Group itself. Although they can’t be characterized under one specific label, Blue Man Group blows past the boundaries of rudimentary rock show and tantalizing theater act. They’re their own specific entity with unparalleled showmanship and ability.
