Do you remember going down to your local five and dime and getting a handful of jelly beans? Do you have any idea where the jelly bean came from? Welcome to Jelly Belly which is the company behind the jelly bean and candy corn so famous on Halloween. This company can be traced all the way back to a German family named Goelitz. Two brothers that came to America back in 1869 purchased an ice cream and candy store in Illinois and used a horse and buggy to deliver their sweets to the neighborhood and nearby towns. The next generation of family developed the buttercream sweets including the Candy Corn way back in 1900. The ancestor of the jelly bean goes back to the times when the Bible was written as a sweet made from a combination of citrus, honey, and rosewater jell were combined. This was originated in Turkey, actually, and the very first American jelly bean does not have a creator to be recognized. During WWII, America had a chocolate shortage but retained their sweet tooth and jelly candies were the delight. The third generation of the Goelitz family was struggling with their Candy Corn operation and expanded to provide jelly beans in 1960, and now you have the story behind Jelly Belly.
