To understand a company called Ulla Popken, you must travel in time back to 1880 when Johann Popken founded his Textile Company. This organization was built on the banks of the Weser River in the Northern part of Germany, and this family owned and ran business operated for eighty years unchanged by society. Yet in 1960, the company had to lease out their holdings due to illness in the family, and the grandchildren of Johann named Friedrich and Ursula or Ulla had a baby daughter. This caused a focus by this organization to begin producing both maternity apparel and baby clothing, and by 1978, the company exploded with growth and expanded into a nationwide chain. The company began its franchising operations in 1984, and they noticed that many large orders were being delivered for maternity clothing. However, the recipients were not pregnant but simply large young women wanting comfortable apparel. In 1993, and after a change to the name Ulla Popken, this company came to the United States. Today, Ulla Popken provides some of the most stylish and comfortable plus size clothing for women in the industry.
